Newmarket Members and Friends
Go To Bat for Local Charities!!
The
balls were really flying for a few hours on Wednesday, March 26th,
in the lobby of The Citizen’s Bank in Newmarket Square. The site
for this year’s Annual NBA Fundraiser looked more like Fenway
Park than a bank lobby. The theme of the Fundraiser was
“Spring Training”. These participants weren’t competing
for a spot on the team, however, but for the chance to be the
high bidder on a wide array of donated auction items.
|
 |
Almost 100 NBA
members and friends were treated to an evening of fun and
camaraderie. A ballpark feast featuring “Fenway sausages &
peppers”, “Ballpark Dogs”, “Lansdowne Street Jerk Chicken” and
“Green Monster Pasta Salad” was provided by our own Victoria
Restaurant, and everyone had the chance to hit a home run for
our local charities. |
This
“fun” networking night is the principle “fund” raising vehicle
for the Association’s monetary contributions to those in need in
the Newmarket area.
The
evening was highlighted by an exciting live auction which
featured a Red Sox Luxury Box donated by Citizen’s Bank, a
signed blue-print of the USS Constitution, round-trip motorcoach
transportation for 55 people to The Mohegan Sun Casino donated
by Paul Revere Transportation and a carpenter’s services for 40
hours donated by Suffolk Construction Company.
|
More
than 50 items were auctioned off and thanks to the generosity of
all of our donors and bidders, over $10,000.00 was collected.
Way to go Newmarket!!! It just goes to show that NBA members
know how to have fun and raise funds for those less fortunate
than ourselves.
Many
thanks to all of our donor companies. Without your generosity,
this event would not be possible. In addition, many thanks to
Mary Alibrandi at Citizen’s Bank for once again being a terrific
host and to Elaine & Bonnie Gossels, Charlie Georgenes, Charlie
& Barbara Killian, Herb Clifford and many others for once again
being in the right place at the right time to help.

invite guests and potential new members! It is always very fun. There will be
live and silent auctions, so please let Sue Sullivan know what your business
will be donating. Thank you for all of your support!

August 14th report 2002
We have started to receive funding requests and will make recommendations in our
report at the next meeting. The State budget cuts are expected to result in an
increase in the need for our help by these worthy charities.
June 12th report 2002
Two donations have been made since the last meeting:
Women’s Hope and Victory Program each received $150 donation.
These programs provide addiction counseling.
Additional donations will probably be announced at the annual meeting on
July 16th.

year’s state budget.

Out, the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, and the South End Neighborhood

the State Legislature. She distributed information to use in calling our local
representatives to urge them to reinstate the level of funding of the Pine
Street Inn in last year’s state budget.
A Motion was
unanimously voted to send letters from the Newmarket Business Association to the
Massachusetts Speaker of the House and Senate President in support of
reinstating the Pine Street Inn’s funding.
April 10th report 2002
The fundraiser at our March meeting was a great success, raising approximately
$12,000, which we will be able to share with our neighbors who need our help.
Special thanks to Citizens Bank for allowing us to use their space for the
party, and to Susan Sullivan and the many members who volunteered to help out at
the event. Thank you to all the members who gave such generous donations. It
was a fun evening, with very spirited bidding!

November 14th report
The NBA donated
$300 to the Multicultural Festival of Dudley Street Neighborhood group and $250
to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for medical research. Members are asked to
nominate a charity to receive the contributions for toys at our December
meeting. Past recipients have let us know that cash contributions give them the
ability to select the most appropriate toy for each child, rather than trying to
pair up the donated toys with kids. Please bring a donation of $10-$20 to the
December meeting.
May 9th report

fund of the Newmarket Business Association.
April 11th report
Brian Maloney and the Contributions Committee and Public Affairs Committee
organized a terrific fundraiser, Caribbean Night.
The auction and a special $1000 contribution from Waldo Brothers in
memory of Brenda Colgan’s father, raised approximately $7,750.
In addition, Tim Riedy from South Bay Mall directed that payments for use
of the Mall’s parking lot for special events should be directed to the Mason
School fund of the Newmarket Business Association.
These donations have totaled approximately $3,000.
Thank you to Citizens Bank for hosting the party and thank you to all of
the donors, bidders, and helpers who made Caribbean Night such a success!
February 14th report
A report by the Contributions Committee was distributed
detailing last year’s donations. The
report concludes that NBA can do more by using our “Evening in the
Caribbean” event to raise funds through an auction and fundraising.
Please donate! We presently
donate approximately 10% of the total annual dues budget to needy causes.
Please plan to donate goods or services that can be auctioned at the
fundraiser. Thanks!
January 10th report
SNAP sent a thank you for the
generous donations of toys and checks from our December meeting.
The March meeting, which will take place in the late afternoon, and will
be a theme party, will be used as a fundraiser to enable Newmarket Business
Association to give more donations to worthy causes during the upcoming year.
We presently donate approximately 10% of the total annual dues budget.
Please plan to donate goods or services that can be auctioned at the
fundraiser. Thanks!
December 13th report 2000
The Newmarket Business Association
has made donations to Casa Esperanza and Place of Promise.
Total contributions for the year are $3,134.38.
At the December Membership Meeting toys and checks were collected for
South End Neighborhood Action Program “SNAP” to make the holidays brighter
for needy children.
September 13th report
Newmarket Business Association donated $300 to the Dudley
Street neighborhood. Place of Promise sent a thank you letter.
August 9th report
No applications were received since the last meeting, and therefore there were
no new donations.
May 10th Report
The committee would like to find a way to increase the
funds available for contributions above the current level of approximately
$2,500 annually. Suggestions were
that members could add $100 to $200 to the annual dues to be earmarked for
contributions. It was also
suggested that retirees may choose to send a check for contributions even after
they are exempt from regular dues. When
members donate to charities in the area, they could include a mention the
connection to Newmarket Business Association.
The focus of giving for Newmarket Business Association remains children
in the neighborhood. members contribute so generously to many of the charities
that Newmarket Business Association spotlights.
A greater effort should be made to publicize the good works achieved by
NBA in the community. Fundraising
events may be increased in order to have more money available for contributions.
April 12th Report
Brian Maloney distributed minutes from the Contributions
Committee’s last meeting. They
report that the Newmarket Business Association is viewed as a “tightwad”
when it comes to contributions because organizations are unaware that the
charter limits donations to 10% of the previous year’s collected dues.
Members pointed out that donations are actually substantially higher
because individual members contribute so generously to many of the charities
that Newmarket Business Association spotlights.
A greater effort should be made to publicize the good works achieved by
NBA in the community. Raffle
proceeds from the recent Mardi Gras event were earmarked to supplement the fund
available to be disbursed by the Contributions Committee.
Two thank you notes were received from the Worcester Firefighters in
appreciation of the NBA donation.
